Oracy

Intent

In Oracy, the intent of our curriculum is to foster the disciplined art of speaking and listening—where thinking, language, expression, and collaboration come together to shape understanding and communication.  It includes both verbal and non-verbal elements and spans a variety of interactions, from formal presentations to collaborative discussions.

The aims of the Oracy Curriculum is to ensure that high-quality classroom talk improves academic outcomes, critical thinking, and social development. High expectations are set for all learners regardless of their background or attainment level.

Implementation

The Oracy Curriculum is designed so that taught skills are built upon in a progressive manner.  Our children learn through modes of speaking, with the most prevalent being exploratory talk, where the children are able to deepen understanding, reason and collaborative. In order to do this, the children are equipped with a set of ‘stances.’ These are aligned with the Oracy Framework, encouraging children to improve their physical, linguistic, social and cognitive skills. To ensure consistency and progression, children are taught specific techniques within each strand and are provided with useful sentences stems which allow children to articulate their understanding.

Impact

Children are an active part of assessing their own learning, through regular feedback in lessons and through belt-based progression. As part of an ongoing assessment, children and teachers use success criteria of each belt, to assess children’s Oracy development.
